WIF Presents... Preparing for a Colonoscopy

More funny in my life. Crazy! Harvard vs HBCU a discussion with my 14yr old daughter.

More funny in my life. Crazy!

So here it is people. Since day one I have been programming and preparing my daughter, Jasmine, for her college career at Harvard as a result she has received nothing but 4.O for the past 3 years. I don't know what happen but all of a sudden after me and her mothers hard work Jasmine wants to now attend a Black College. Now I have no problem with her going to a black college but that was not our plan. So long story short we go back and forth and she tells me to write her a letter on why she should go to Harvard vs a black college (HBCU). The following is what took place...

Harvard vs HBCU

Daddy;

Okay, here is my stance on the Harvard versus HBCU argument. First, there is nothing wrong with an HBCU, but it just doesn't have the cache (look it up) of Harvard. First, Harvard is the oldest University, not that being old in itself makes it better, but it does mean that it has had more time to perfect the idea of what it means to provide someone with a world class education. What you will see when researching the history is that HBCU's were born because of the dearth (look it up) of opportunities for blacks to attend the best universities. They essentially became the option because the other options weren't there. That problem no longer exist. A black person who achieves can now go anywhere they please. With that being said, why not go to the place that is the most respected institution of higher education in the WORLD? Why attend a college just because they cater to your ethnicity?
Going to Harvard would be the equivalent of being drafted in the NBA, while an HBCU, although good universities and colleges, would in comparison be the CBA. The difference in the caliber of classmate would be vast. Why not attend the school which is going to give you the greatest challenge and in return the greatest rewards. Also you have better chance of becoming president. Eight of our US presidents, including the beloved Barack Obama, have attended Harvard. Currently, seven. John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Rutherford B. Hayes, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, & George W. Bush. This doesn't even include all the business men and women and important people who are also alumnus of Harvard. What it amounts to is a vast network of people who hold important positions who would give you an opportunity just based on that one commonality: Harvard! You will soon find out that in this world how far people go is based on who they know and then once they've gotten the chance, what they know comes into play.As far as blackness is concerned Harvard has one of the best African American Studies programs in the whole country, headed by a guy named Henry Louis Gates Jr. Look him up. There was also a really renown professor there named Cornell West. So if you were really interested in African American history then this would be an option. Again, notice he's the most respected in the field. That's what you get at Harvard. As a professional, I can tell you that Harvard is a dream. That Harvard has the reputation and the money to bring in whoever they choose as faculty and because of this you would be studying with the best of the best. HBCU's just don't have the reputations and surely not the funds to compete. Speaking of which, not that money should be a motivating factor, but the average Harvard graduate makes between 95-100k as compared to the average college graduate making 53k (2005). So you'd almost double your earning potential by going on to Harvard. Who doesn't like Money?! With all this being said you should always question information. Do the research and find out things for yourself. Don't trust so much that you become ignorant too credulous (look it up). Here are links to begin your own inquiry;

And last, conduct a little survey. ask your teachers if they had a chance to attend Howard or Harvard on a full scholarship which would they choose and why. See how the answers come back.

I will expect a response to this letter in similar length by the end of the day tomorrow.

I love you and only want the best for you.

Your Daddy,

Jasmine;

OKAY. Here is my mien on the Harvard versus HBCU rhubarb (look it up) . First after looking information up on the internet I realized that Harvard is the best college for me or anyone to ever attend. However that doesn't mean I'm giving up on my part of this debate, because I still feel that you need to hear my reasoning for wanting to go to spelman. I wanted to go to spelman, because people don't act weird, stare at you and your not a black student in class, your just a student in class. And you can speak without feeling what your saying to the question "Should Barack Obama be president?"Is being a representative of your race, but what a student thinks.I also wanted to attend spelman, because it requires high GPA admittance. And, because they look at potential, who you could be not who you are. They make you into scholars and leaders in the wider world and with in the black community. And with this being said you should always see others points of view and not always try to be a no it all, big head!lol:) Love you daddykins!!

Daddy;
